Vocabulary and Description of Dry ARMD • Drusen are yellow spots that form on the retina. • The retina is at the back of the eye. • Macula is an area located near the middle of the retina which helps us see texture. • The macula of the retina gets covered by drusen. • People of age 65 or older get it. • To prevent it wear sunglasses with uv protection and/or eat lots of vitamins A,C,E. • Lighter eye colors have a higher chance to get ARMD than darker eye colors.
Patient Symptoms • Early symptoms are slight black or fuzziness in the central part of the field of vision • Area of fuzziness grows larger • Eye feels painless
Anatomy of Patient’s Eye • In the back of the eye, drusen form over the macula • The eye does not look different from the outside
Health Reasons that May Cause ARMD • Obesity • High blood pressure • Smoking
Treatment and Prognosis • No way to completely eliminate ARMD • Vitamins A,C,E help slow the progress • Low vision devices help the progress slow down
