Field Safety for Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) Field Work- Work activities occurring outside of the typical office, indoor meeting room or conference room setting. Purpose- To protect employees from physical, biological, and chemical hazards on the job by establishing work place practices that reduce the risk from exposure to such hazards.

Field Safety for Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) IPP Activities: Surveillance (Industrial) • Sampling • Inspections
Field Safety for Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) Written Documents: • Job Safety Analysis (JSA) • Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) • Emergency Response Plan
Field Safety for Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) Sampling: Hazards Assessment • Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) • Vehicle • Chemical • Facility
Field Safety for Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) – Department of Labor General Industry Safety Standards Commission Safety Standards Part 33. Personal Protective Equipment (R408.13301 – R408.13398) Department of Public Health Occupational Health Standards for Construction and for General Industry
Field Safety for Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) PPE – all protection devices that workers use on the job to protect themselves from: • Physical injuries • Chemical contact injuries • Noise • Temperature • Radiation
Field Safety for Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) PPE – • Gloves • Apron • Suits • Foot wear – boots, waders • Safety Glasses, Goggles, Face Shields, • Head wear – hard hat, helmet • Ear plugs • Respirator – dust mask, half face , full face, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) • Personal Floatation Device
PPE being used correctly • Tyvex Suit • Vinyl gloves • Foot wear • Safety Glasses
Field Safety for Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) Vehicle – Safely operate a vehicle • Operator License • Maintenance- Check sheet, clean vehicle • Vision – corrective lenses, nothing hanging from mirrors • Hearing- no headphones • Smoking – discouraged, company policy • Food and beverages- discouraged • Driving while impaired – physical impairment, prescription, alcohol, illegal drugs • Passengers – Company policy • Traffic Laws

Vehicle • Unsafe
Vehicle • Safe way to conduct vehicle activity
Field Safety for Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) Vehicle – • Roadway safety – Michigan Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices – Part 6 Short Term Duration • Accident – Do not leave scene (except to receive medical attention), notify the police, file accident report, follow company policy.
Field Safety for Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) Chemical – Limit your exposure • Reagent Bottles • Sample Bottles • Sampling Manhole/Provisions
Sampling at an Industrial User • Industrial Surveillance use portable samplers to collect representative composite samples
Portable Gas Monitor • Oxygen concentration • Explosive Level • Toxic concentration • Carbon monoxide concentration
Portable Gas Monitor • Calibration • Auto calibration demonstration • Manufacturer’s recommendation
Portable Gas Monitor • Check the concentrations of gases in your breathing space
Field Safety for Industrial Pretreatment Program (IPP) Facility Inspections- Become as knowledgeable as possible about the facility’s past and current site conditions. • Hazards Awareness- review files, facility’s written safety and workers right to know program, types of equipment on site, chemicals stored on site, physical condition of site. Arrange to tour the facility with someone who is familiar with the site. • Expect the unexpected – Hilo, horns, noise, etc.
Facility Inspection Be sure you are knowledgeable about the chemicals stored or in use and their major hazards.

Facility Inspection • Unsafe During the walk through use care on both stairs and ladders
Facility Inspection • Unsafe During the walk through use care on both stairs and ladders
Facility Inspection Confined Space – do not enter unless trained as; supervisor, attendant, or entrant, and following procedures. • Is large enough and so configured that an employee can bodily enter and performed assigned work • Has limited or restricted means for entry or exit • Is not designed for continuous employee occupancy
Facility Inspection Confined Space – Permit Required Confined Space • Contains, or has the potential to contain a hazardous substance • Contains a material that has the potential for engulfing an entrant (corn in silo). • Has an internal configuration such that , an entrant could be trapped or asphyxiated by inwardly converging walls or by a floor which slopes downward and tapers to a smaller cross section (water tower) • Contains any other recognized serious safety or health hazard
Facility Inspection Confined Space – Non-Permit Required Confined Space • A confined space that does not contain, or with respect to atmospheric hazard, have the potential to contain any hazard capable of causing death or serious physical harm.
Facility Inspection Confined Space –An industrial user should not have an IPP monitor manhole/provision in a confined space. Put language in your Sewer Use Ordinance to prohibit this.
