Background information: • The workshop was a spin-off from the First South Atlantic Regional Data Assembly Center Meeting, Cape Town, South Africa, May 12-14, 2005. • A proposal was submitted and funded by US Argo,the Global Change SysTem for Analysis, Research, and Training (START) and the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem Programme (BCLME) • The International Organizing Committee • Mr. Mathiue Belbeoch (France) • Dr. Silvia Garzoli (USA) • Dr. Regina Folorunsho (Nigeria) • Ms. Judith Gray (USA) • Dr. Kabineh Konneh • Dr. Robert Molinari (USA) • Dr. Steven Piotrowich (USA) • Ms. S. Armah, Regina Folorunsho “The workshop was held to help address issues relating to regional capacity building on Argo data access and applications to monitor, predict and mitigate the adverse impacts of variations in ocean temperatures, salinity and currents on the Atlantic countries of Africa (Morocco to South Africa)… … The rationale for the meeting was provided by regional needs and the new ocean observing system, Argo.”

  25. In November 2006, within the framework of Argo related activities, the Argentine Naval Hydrographic Center launched a public awareness/capacity building project involving local high schools similar to the “Adopt a Buoy” program. The idea is to promote development of projects at several school, including the adoption of the donated floats.

  26. Appropriate contacts were identified in several schools and science teachers were provided with information about Argo, data accessibility and software. Lt.Cdr A.Troisi (SHN), Eng. Pablo Gonzalez (San Felipe Neri , Mataderos School), Lic. Jorge Mermoz (Jesus en el Huerto de los Olivos School), Prof Robert Foot ("San Marcos” School, San Isidro). Both teachers and students count on the support of the SHN and the NODC.

  27. The initial stage of this program will start in March 2007, including an award to be presented to the best project of the year. According to local sources, the idea generated great enthusiasm among those involved and good results are expected.

  29. Students participate in the deployment and tracking of the floats. This is used to teach about ocean currents and water masses in the oceans.
