SEC Collaboration with Strategic Standards Management and GATIC • IEEE Standards Education Committee • 20 May 2014 • Howard Wolfman/Susan K. Tatiner
Background • Strategic Standards Management website developed with NIST grant by the Global Advanced Technology Innovation Consortium (GATIC) • “It is designed to increase recognition of the growing strategic and competitive importance and complexity of standards and participation in standards development and the need to deepen coverage in business and engineering curricula.” • Topics include innovation; smart systems/IoT; standards development; supply chain; sustainability • There is an Advisory Group organized by topic and a list of 6 Collaborating Organizations: ANSI, ASTM, NIST, UL, GATIC, ISO
Specific Opportunities for Collaboration • Linked papers on topics • Teaching and Training Materials • With links to SEC training materials • IEEE contacts can be added to the Advisory Group • IEEE can be added to the list of Collaborating Organizations • “IEEE” preferred • Participation in the Discussion Forum is open to all
Additional Idea for Collaboration with GATIC and others • Business School Debate on the Future of the Internet • Other possible partner …. Global Business Schools Network (GBSN) • Global debate held on Google Hangout • DRAFT TOPIC STATEMENT: • The Internet relies on thousands of technical standards built by many standards developing organizations around the world over time, using open processes that stress technical excellence and favor innovation… and voluntarily adopted by technology companies to support diverse and flexible product lines. • After ~25 years of development, what’s next? And what will it mean for the global economy, regional economies, your future?
Motion • IEEE SEC recommends to the IEEE Educational Activities Board and the IEEE-SA Board of Governors that IEEE becomes a collaborating body with Strategic Standards Management.
