  1. Improving progression routes to third level Diarmuid O’Callaghan PhD Registrar Institute of Technology Blanchardstown

  2. Traditional route from second- to third-level based on CAO points from leaving-certificate results • Simple minimum eligibility rules L6/7: Pass in five subjects including Maths and English/Irish L8: Two Honours and four passes • Allocation of CAO points for specific grades • Historic acceptance of number of points allocated for similar grades in pass and honours papers • CAO points calculated from single sitting

  3. FETAC links scheme • Originated as NCVA level 2 links scheme • Number of places (originally 10%) reserved for FETAC graduates with full award • Progression to “linked” programme only • Limited choice • Unclear how many places available • Uneven pressure for places in different disciplines • Progression routes uncertain

  4. How would you give equality of opportunity for progression from two different routes at same NFQ level? • Rank applicants on single list • Recognition of meeting minimum entry requirement • May be specific module requirements • Recognised points allocation • Removal of restriction to “linked” courses

  5. Rationale for revised scoring of FETAC (NCVA level 2 and 3) awards • To introduce transparent minimum entry standards • To reduce restrictions on access to specific courses currently imposed by application of the higher education links scheme. • To develop a fair and consistent points system for ranking FETAC applicants who have reached the minimum admission requirements, • To maintain an appropriate entry standard by requiring FETAC students to present a full award (in any discipline). • To create equity among different FETAC applicants as regards the number of modules for which points can be counted. • To recognise that FETAC modules are taken at different levels and can have different credit values.

  6. Point allocation Pass: 20 points Merit: 35 points Distinction: 50 points • Points for best 8 modules • Scores are adjusted • pro rata to take account of credit values other than 1 for the module. • pro rata to take account of the module level; • level 1 scores are multiplied by 0.5, • level 2 scores are multiplied by 1.0, and • level 3 scores are multiplied by 1.25

  7. Specific module requirements improved progression opportunity Original "links" scheme

  8. Example: IT BlanchardstownCourses facilitating progression from FETAC course into first year * These figures refer to students who gained entry to ITB based solely on points from FETAC awards. It does not include mature students who may also have taken FETAC awards.

  9. Number of courses facilitating progression from any FETAC course with no specific module requirements into first year* * Source: CAO website
