Armed for Battle Ephesians 6:10-17. The reality of the war we are engaged in:.
E N D
The reality of the war we are engaged in: • Ephesians 6:12 (NIV) For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Ephesians 6:13 (NIV) - Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground. • A command and a promise: • Command “put on” the armour • Promise we will be able to stand our ground against Satan • It is the armourof God • A call to action.
A. The Belt – Living By Truth in a World of Deception • Ephesians 6:14 (NIV) - Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist. • The belt holds the armour together. • God’s truth holds us together during spiritual battle. • i) truth = God’s Word • John 8:32 (NIV) – “You will know truth and the truth will set you free”
John 17:17 (NIV) – “Sanctify them by your truth; you word is truth” • ii) truth = the character of a person having an attitude of truthfulness • 1 John 3:18 (NIV) Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. • Satan is a liar and the Father of Lies. • The effective Christian warrior speaks truth and lives by God’s truth.
B. The Breastplate – Reflecting God’s Righteousness • Soldier’s breastplate protected vital organs, especially the heart. • Ephesians 6:14b (NIV) - “Stand firm then…with the breastplate of righteousness in place.” • Not imputed righteousness • 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NIV) - God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
The breastplate of righteousness we need to be reflecting the righteous character of God in our behaviour. • The practice of personal holiness. • Colossians 3:12–13 (NIV) Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
C. Battle Boots: Having Peace to be Ready to Stand Against Evil • The footwear of a Roman soldier helped him stand his ground • Battle boots represent a readiness (NIV) – a preparation (NKJV) for battle. • Readiness comes from the peace we have through faith in Christ • Romans 5:1 (NIV) - Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Confidence comes from the peace we receivewhen through faith we know • that our sins are forgiven • that God’s Spirit lives in us • that Satan has already been defeated through Christ’s victory over sin & death. • John 14:27 (NIV) – Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. • Philippians 4:7 (NIV) - …the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
D. The Shield – Faith to Protect Us from Temptation • Ephesians 6:16a (NIV) - In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith… • Ephesians 6:16b (NIV) – “…with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” • Satan uses his fiery arrows to ignite desires in us that lead us to sin (James 1) • We need faith to withstand these attacks.
E. The Helmet – The Assurance of Our Salvation • Ephesians 6:17 (NIV) - Take the helmet of salvation… • God’s gift of salvation is permanent. • Satan likes to attack our assurance. • The fact that the helmet is related to salvation indicates that Satan’s blows are directed at the believer’s security and assurance in Christ. Two dangerous edges of Satan’s spiritual sword are discouragement and doubt. (John MacArthur Jr.) • Job 13:15 (NIV) – Though he slay me, yet I will hope in him.
F. The Sword of the Spirit - God’s Words to Live By • Ephesians 6:17 (NIV) – Take… the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. • Greek: logos – God’s Word • 1 Peter 1:23 (NIV) - For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. • John 1:1 (NIV) - “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was God.
Greek: rhema - “sayings” or “truths” of God • “the sword of the Spirit” the specific truths of God from the Bible. • The Bible = the armory – the storehouse of all of our weapons • The Sword of the Spirit = those specific truths in God’s Word we need to resist temptations to sin.
We definitely need to read our Bibles (go into the armory); but when we are reading the Bible, the Spirit applies something the Bible says in a way that brings life to our faith. When that happens, your faith is increased…Many believers carry around their Bible like good luck charms. “I’m safe from the devil because I’ve got my sword with me.” No, what you have with you is the armory – the repository of the swords. And if you are not daily reading and meditating on that Bible, the Spirit will not have the ‘rhema’ of God to work with in your life when you need it the most.(Dr. David Jeremiah, Spiritual Warfare)
Are you armed for battle? • Be truthful in everything you do • Live by the standard of personal holiness • Stand against evil with the confidence of God’s peace with you • Let your faith in God protect you from evil attacks • Remember your salvation is certain and permanent • Read God’s Word every day so you can defeat the temptations and schemes Satan will use against you with His truth.
