Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham Sound Baptist Bible College Fall 2002 Lesson Three Chapters 12-50
Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham I. ABRAHAM A. His Country Gen 11:31 And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there. (KJV) Ø Ur of Chaldees was a pagan place. Ø Abraham was not originally a worshiper of the true God. God led him away from old culture and faith to the truth.
Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham I. ABRAHAM B. His Call Gen 12:1-3 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. (KJV) Promised A new home A new worship A new Saviour
Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham I. ABRAHAM C. His Course Heb 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. (KJV) (To the Promised Land) He went not knowing where he went (faith) His faith and obedience was accounted as righteousness
Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham I. ABRAHAM D. His Conduct Regarding Egypt and his wife Gen 12:9-13 And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south. And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land. And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon:Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee. (KJV) Ø Lack of faith to leave the Promised Land Ø Lack of faith to lie about his wife (may have had reason – when you are out of God’s will you never know what might happen!)
Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham I. ABRAHAM E. His Children IshmaelA child of the flesh. This is man attempting to do right in his own strength. IsaacA child of faith. This is God doing what He said He would do through man, but only after man realized he could not do it without God Sons of KeturahWhile the Bible says nothing negative about this marriage and the subsequent children, they were a thorn in Israel’s flesh (especially the Medianites) and that thorn exists even to this day.
Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham II. ISAAC A. His miraculous conception Heb 11:11-12 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because shejudged him faithful who had promised. Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.(KJV) Ø Born only after his parents were, so far as child bearing is concerned, “as good as dead”
Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham II. ISAAC B. His monumental deliverance Gen 22:8-10 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. (KJV) Isaac is a picture of Jesus not only in his birth but in his father’s willingness to offer him as a sacrifice Abraham’s faith is displayed when he says, “God will provide a lamb.” That of course is prophetic of the Lord Jesus Christ too.
Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham II. ISAAC C. His magnificent bride Gen 24:12-16 And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham. Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water: And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master. And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up. (KJV) Ø A picture of God calling out the saved.O Abraham pictures God the Fathero Isaac Pictures Jesuso Servant is a picture of the Holy Spirito Rebekah is a picture of the church the Bride
Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham II. ISAAC D. His less that model children Ø Esau o Of the flesh. Ø Jacob o One who has been called of God but too often takes things in his own hands. Why is it that some of the best people raise not so good of children? Could it be that we think of them as best in the wrong areas? I am of the opinion that a man is not great unless he is able to pass on his qualities to his children.
Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham III. JACOB A. The Trouble at Home Gen 25:27-28 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents. And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob. (KJV) Ø He is the second born – and was not in line for the blessing of the birthright. Ø He was the more spiritual of the two and God had selected him to carry on his father’s spiritual lineage Ø He (and his mother) were deceptive and it cost them ever seeing each other again.
Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham III. JACOB B. The Trial with Laban Gen 29:23-25 And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her. And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid. And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me? (KJV) The deceiver was deceived by Laban on a number of occasions. Promised one daughter and given the other Promised a particular length of service for his bride and required to give another Be sure your sin will find you out. God will see to it you pay for the sins you commit.
Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham III. JACOB B. The Trial with Laban Besides the trials Jacob went through because of Laban Ø He never saw his mother alive again Ø He experienced a very stressful encounter with his brother (after probably 20 years of worrying about the encounter!)
Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham III. JACOB C. The testing with Children Ø His many wives o While accepted in that day, it was not right before God Ø His numerous offspring o Fought with each other o Were wicked in many ways The case with Dinah and the men of Shechem The case of the one having a prostitute relationship with his daughter in law The case of them all selling Joseph as a slave
Old Testament Survey - Genesis, Post-Abraham III. JACOB C. The testing with Children Ø His favorites Joseph and Benjamin o Joseph was sold as a slave and sent into Egypt where, instead of pouting, he went to work. God blessed and wrought a great victory for Israel through it. Life can dish out some very unjust and unfair things. Don’t use them as an excuse to quit. Use them as an opportunity to shine for the Lord!
