  2. BRIEF HISTORY 1920’s, Marine researches started in Xiamen University. In the 1930’s, Xiamen University became the research center for China’s endeavors in marine biology. 1946, China’s first Department of Oceanography and first Institute of Marine Research were established at XMU. 1955, China’s first postgraduate education of marine biology commenced at Xiamen University 1970, Xiamen University resumed the Department of Oceanography. 1996, College of Oceanography and Environmental Science was founded. 2005, State Key Laboratory of MarineEnvironmental Science (Xiamen University) was established. 2006, Department ofMarine Technology and Engineering wasfounded.

OUTREACH • IN: • National “908 Special Survey of Coastal Waters ” • Polar study • Ocean Survey • Scientific expeditions in the East China Sea and South China Sea • Our graduates have performed as well-trained scientists under pressure and earned themselves praise and applause. • The educational model of marine subjects and practical education system has been positive counterparts for domestic institutions to follow. • Our college undertakes the teacher training and schooling for related domestic colleges and research units. • We also offer Marine and Environmental Science quality education courses and related experimental course for our university.

OUTREACH • COE students are very active in diverse social activities: • Explain the sea knowledge in "National Marine Popular Science Education Base, Xiamen University " and "Xiamen Underwater World " • Do marine science lectures in Xiamen primary and secondary schools • Breed water purification technology and technical services for aquaculture farmers

  19. SUMMARY We are making efforts to push the ocean education forward, bringing it from colleges and universities to become part of people’s everyday lives.
