  1. Effective Media Campaigns We the Students http://ourrevolution.co/2011/09/how-to-start-an-awareness-campaign-for-your-cause/

  2. Introduction We all have some cause we are passionate about, whether it’s finding the cure for breast canceror raising awareness about environmental issues. But, what do you do if you are passionate about something that isn’t well known or doesn’t directly affect people in your area? Does it make it any better or any worse? The problem is still there and most likely you passion about it, is too. What do you do? Start your own awareness campaign!

  3. Step 1: Form a Committee • While it’s not unheard of for one person to get a project off the ground, it will make things easier if you have a helping hand or two or five. • You are in groups of 4-5 so you already have this step covered!!

  4. Step 2: Research • Research, research, research!! • You will need to present the facts about your cause and why people should pay attention to it. • Gather relevant facts and figures from credible sources that apply to your campaign.

  5. Step 3: Develop a Mission Statement • When you start marketing your awareness campaign, you’ll need to tell people exactly what it is you hope to accomplish and how you want them to help you do it. • Mission Statement = Focuses your energy and clarifies your purpose. When you try to write your mission statement, you will find that you have to really define what you are going to do.

  6. Step 4: Contact Experts • Whether it is in person or online article, find experts on the issue. • If it’s environmental, get in touch with scientists and environmental engineers from your area. If it’s medical, find doctors or other specialists. Explain your concerns and ask them what can be done to help. • Try to get a quote that you can use in future materials you make for your campaign—having a professional support your concerns will help make people stand up and take notice. • Keep a list of your contacts/sources, in case you need to go back to them.

  7. Step 5: Start Spreading the Word Ways to get the word out: • Create poster boards and signs to hang up around town. • Write letters to the editor of your local paper. • Set up a website and use social media to get the word out. • Hand out business cards. • Set up a table at a local fair or storefront. • Ask local businesses to help distribute your literature. • Hold a rally. *You will be creating a video, flyers and a website for your cause!!

  8. Step 6: Don’t Give Up! There are numerous ways you can start getting your cause noticed. The trick is to be creative, be confident, and be bold. What are you waiting for? Get out there and change the world!
