  1. Towards Academic Excellence in Computer Science Engineering and Information Technology through Laboratory and Project Work Dr. Krishna Asawa (JIIT) Hema N (JIIT) Manisha Rathi (JIIT) Mukta Goel (JIIT) Shelly sachdeva (JIIT) Gunjan Gupta (JIIT) Yamuna Prasad (JIIT) Ajay Roy (JIIT)

  2. Excellence through Laboratory and Project Work Difficulties identified: • Why to focus on Lab and Project work • How to encourage Interdisciplinary project (Expertise of domain knowledge). • To what extent Level/Depth integration (Horizontal and Vertical) should be introduced • Identification and elimination of plagiarism • Scarcity of required resources availability

  3. Excellence through Laboratory and Project Work(difficulties cont….) • How to inculcate incremental project development beginning from First year to Final year. • How to formulate different questions for the same concept for number of batches. • Lab courses without lecture and tutorial are difficult to handle. • How to minimize variations in project /lab evaluation.

  4. Possible solutions • Why to focus on Lab and Project work • It gives opportunity to realize theoretical concepts through lab and projects • Problem based Learning is more effective. • Why Group Project ? • Group project will generate a series of linked activities focused on the three key areas of team working, project planning and presentation skills which results in co-operative learning. • Its a good strategy to manage large number of students. • Social driven projects can be encouraged which may reduces the problems of the society.

  5. Possible solutions(cont..) • How to encourage Interdisciplinary project (Expertise of domain knowledge). • Encourage students to attend specialized workshop/seminars/conferences/lectures etc. • Constitution of in house student chapters for their own technical deliberations • To what extent Level/Depth integration (Horizontal and Vertical) should be introduced • Laboratory assignments should be real life problem based. • Some of the Good projects should be discussed in the lectures to motivate the students.

  6. Possible solutions(cont..) • Identification and elimination of plagiarism • Some software should be used to eliminate the plagiarism up to some extent [like in JIITU we are using Plagio-Guard tool(developed by our undergraduate students) for C/C++ and Java programs]. • Weekly evaluation of lab should not be carried out because learning and evaluation in time constrained can not go simultaneously. • Scarcity of required resources availability • Well established organizations should open sabbatical programmes for faculties and students as well. • Meanwhile we could develop our own recourses and facilities keeping in mind the budgetary constraints.

  7. Possible solutions(cont..) • How to inculcate incremental project development beginning from First year to Final year. • Realization of big project by its incremental design. • Many individual project assignment should be from a broader domain. • How to formulate different questions for the same concept for number of batches. • Stimulate the students to frame at least one question around a concept. • Lab courses without lecture and tutorial are difficult to handle. • Design the techno-manual and brief about the concept around which lab exercises are framed in first 15 minutes.

  8. Possible solutions(cont..) • How to minimize variations in project /lab evaluation. • Project should be evaluated by Special Interest Group members. • Lab evaluation criteria should be set through regular meetings among all lab instructors. • Frequency of mid term Final year project evaluation should be reduced to increase working time and interaction between student and faculty. • Some statistical correction should be applied to eliminate the variations in the evaluation of the subjects having more than one instructors and batches
