  1. Conflict Understanding conflict helps you learn about the story, about human nature, and about yourself.

  2. Conflict Conflict is the struggle between two opposing forces. The main character usually faces a problem, or tries to reach a goal. The actions the character takes to resolve this determines the stories plot.

  3. Types of Conflict External Conflicts: • individual vs. individual • individual vs. nature • individual vs. society • individual vs. supernatural • individual vs. technology

  4. Types of Conflict Internal Conflict • individual vs. self – the inner struggle with yourself Do I or don’t I?

  5. Individual vs. Individual This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with another character, human or not human. The ducklings did as they were bid, but the other duck stared, and said, “Look, here comes another brood, as if there were not enough of us already! and what a queer looking object one of them is; we don’t want him here,” and then one flew out and bit him in the neck.   6. Individual vs. Nature This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with the forces of nature, which serve as the antagonist. It´s a Truffula Seed. It´s the last one of all! You´re in charge of the last of the Truffula Seeds. And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs. Plant a new Truffula. Treat it with care. Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air. Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack. Then the Lorax and all of his friends may come back. The Lorax by Dr. Seuss

Individual vs. Society This type of conflict has the main character in conflict with a larger group: a community, society, culture, etc. “I’m tired of living in a hole,” said Jenny. “Let’s fight for freedom!” cried Bouncer. “We’ll be soldiers!   8. Individual vs. Supernatural This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with unearthly beings. The old Fairy's turn coming next, with a head shaking more with spite than age, she said that the Princess should have her hand pierced with aspindle and die of the wound.   9. Individual vs. Technology This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with some type of technology. Computer (Louis): Your life is in danger Y/N? Kevin: I explained to Louis that my life wasn’t really threatened. But it could be made very unpleasant by Chuck. Louis flashed: Computer: This Chuck lives at the same address as the Ginny person:Y/N Kevin: I punched in Y. Louis answered Computer (Louis): Don’t worry then. He’s history!   10. Individual vs. Self In this type of conflict, the main character experiences some kind of inner conflict. “I’ve been thinking about it too, panin.
