6th Grade Morning Activity • After going to lockers, be in your seats by 7:50 am, ready to begin, quiet and working on completing the morning activity posted for the appropriate day. • Monday: Studying for Chapter 4 Final Spelling and Vocabulary Test on Friday; make flash cards if desired; no partners • Tuesday: Free Novel Reading (be sure to have either a novel from Miss Mendoza’s class or a book of your own) • Wednesday: SUDOKU • Thursday: Last Day to work on Chapter 4 Vocabulary Packet; study spelling and vocabulary, finish working on yesterday’s art • Friday: Study Day

1-11Writing Expressions Sixth Grade Math
Objective • To translate word phrases into algebraic expressions. • Why? To master another aspect of Algebra and Functions in 6th grade math (and beyond). Being able to write expressions is a key component in Algebra and other higher math when solving any kind of word problem.
California State Standards AF 1.2: Evaluate an algebraic expression for a given situation, using up to three variables. AF 1.3: Apply algebraic order of operations and the commutative, associative, … properties to evaluate expressions… MR 3.0: Move beyond a particular problem by generalizing to other situations.
Vocabulary Chart of terms for the 4 operations. \ * Order matters in the set-up of each expression; VERY important! Remember about parentheses: 6 times the sum of y and 1 = 6 x (y + 1) or 6(y + 1)
How to Write Expressions 1) Read the statement and understand what you are being asked to do. 2) Look for the key words to translate into operations (+, -, x, ÷). 3) Look for “is” to translate to =. 4) Parentheses are used to arrange in a certain order. 5) Write out your expression or equation and check your work. • A sum of a number and 3. = x + 3 B) 37 increased by 5 = 37 + 5 C) 10 times a number = 10 x n or 10n or 10‧n D) 2 less than a number = n – 2 E) A quantity more than 10 = 10 + x
