Making (good) video for the web Tom Wilkinson Online Media Producer
Reading this later? The spoken part of this lecture is below (so don’t worry if you’ve missed anything)
The landscape • 2 billion minutes • A fact of life
Videos are cheap… except in time On average, 1 minute of video takes 7 – 8 hours of work to complete.
Some golden rules • Know your message and your audience • The main point of a film is to show, not tell • Make films you would want to see
Pre-production • Budget time • Get permission (not about quality but it’s worth mentioning)
Production • Keep it properly lit • Keep it properly framed • Think about cutaways/b-roll • Sound matters
Production: Sound • Sound matters (more?) • Get a good mic, place it well, listen to it
Post-production • Edit: cut, cut, cut • Brand it & format it
Who you can draw on • Online Media Producer : ox.ac.uk/YouTube • OUCSpodcasts.ox.ac.uk / iTunes U • Media production unit (part of OUCS) • Freelancers • Volunteers
How you can build you skills • Find collaborators • Make use of the learning opportunities out there • Tinker
