the great society • The Great Society was LBJ’s plan to improve the quality of living in America over the next half century using the power and wealth America had. • “We have the opportunity to move not only toward the rich and the powerful society, but upward to the Great Society.” • This “Great Society” was LBJ’s solution for the war on poverty. This plan improved the lives of millions of Americans by setting up programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

Medicare and Medicaid • Medicare - It provided basic hospital insurance for anyone under social security over the age of 65 years old. • Medicaid - It provided basic medical care for the poor and disabled Americans. Medicaid and Medicare delivered much needed healthcare to everyone across America which was not in place before.

Elementary and secondary education act (1965) • Another main focus of “The Great Society” was education. This was especially focused towards schools in poorer communities. • It provided federal funds to improve school libraries, learning centers, and language laboratories. • The act increased funding mainly for indian, inner city, and Mexican-American schools.

Water Quality Act/Clean Water Restoration act • Books were written to raise awareness about protecting the environment and the consumer. • Rachael Carson’s Silent Spring (1962) which detailed how fertilizer and pesticides where damaging our environment. • Ralph Nader’s Unsafe at Any Speed (1965) attacked the automotive industry for it’s lack of concern for passenger safety. • Aimed to improve water and air standards in the country. • The act was focused especially on the ecological health of waterways for fishing and swimming. • The act is largely ineffective because it calls for connecting pollution to polluter. National traffic and motor vehicle safety act • It was enacted by LBJ in 1966 with the intention to empower the federal government to set and administer new safety standards for motor vehicles and road traffic safety • Motor vehicle death rate dropped noticeably after this act was put into place • New road rules include: Required seat belts for every passenger, Required doors that would not fly off in a crash, impact absorbing steering wheels, and shatter resistant windshields and defrosters for windows • Before this was enacted, more Americans died in traffic related incidents than in any of the wars before

Immigration and nationality act of 1965 • Also known as the hart-seller act it abolished the national origins formula that had been in place in America since the emergency quota act of 1921. • The emergency quota act restricted the number of immigrants admitted from any country annually to 3% of the number of residents from that same country living in the United States. • This act opened up the doors to millions of immigrants and provided America with a plethora of ideas, talents, and skills.
