THE GREAT SOCIETY-extraordinary program of reforms to heal nation • -LBJ included Kennedy’s proposed tax cuts and civil rights agenda • -Great Society initiatives included=poverty relief, education aid, healthcare, voting rights, conservation and beautification projects, urban renewal, and economic growth in depressed areas
WAR ON POVERTY-LBJ knew the pain of poverty firsthand growing up impoverished himself in Texas. • -1964-ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES ACT-under it- • -HEAD START-preschool program for children from low income families that also provides healthcare, nutrition services, and social services. • -VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America)-sent volunteers to help people in poor communities • -ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION ACT 1965-$1.3 billion in aid to schools based on # of low income students
-MEDICARE-provides hospital and low cost medical insurance to most Americans age 65 and older • -MEDICAID-provides low cost health insurance coverage to poor Americans of any age who cannot afford their own private health care. • -IMMIGRATION ACT OF 1965-replaced varying quotas with a limit on 20,000 immigrants per year from any one country outside the Western Hemisphere (a lot more flexible than previous quota systems)
WARREN COURT-Kennedy/Johnson years featured many landmark decisions in the Supreme Court. Often called the Warren Court after the Chief Justice Earl Warren • -MIRANDA RULE-court decisions and changes under LBJ allowed for more protection of the accused-police must inform accused persons that they have the right to remain silent, that anything they say can be used against them in court, that they have the right to an attorney; and if they can not afford an attorney, one will be appointed to them. • -APPORTIONMENT-distribution of seats in a legislature among electoral districts
JOHNSON’S FOREIGN POLICIES/ISSUES • -Deeply involved in Vietnam, he was determined to prevent the spread of communism into S. Vietnam • -Increased US spending and troop involvement
