  2. Which brand of phone do you currently own/would prefer to own?

  3. Which brand of phone do you currently own/would prefer to own? • Samsung is currently the most popular phone brand among the people who have taken the survey. • Samsung is also the most preferred brand. • The largest loss in numbers from owned to preferred is Samsung which shows a decrease in popularity. • The largest gain by far is Other.

  4. If your preferred brand is different from your current brand please state why. • “I just don’t have enough money for the model that I really want” • “Because I want Phonebloks!” • “The phonebloks project & motorolaara projects aren't finished yet.” • “Because they are prototyping with a modular phone!!” • “Motorola produces cheap and powerful phones, though no extra SD-Card prevents me from buying a new one”

  5. Which mobile phone carrier do you currently use? • Judging by the large number of ‘Other’ the survey presumably does not cater very well for the large variety in the geographical location of the participants.

  6. From these results it is obvious that the modular phone would have to be available as both PAYG and contract in order to bring in the most revenue.

  7. Do you find the Ara to be aesthetically pleasing? • “The colours and overall fashionable style is wonderful, but the sliding module aspect isn't appealing at all. Definitely want a Lego-like module installation system.” • “kind of No. The concept remains the same as that of Phonebloks, but it seems to be much less flexible in terms of customization. A fundamental difference is that ARA limits the size of the modular parts to what the size of the available slot is. Phonebloks does not have that requirement, allowing for even greater customization ability” • “Ara is very aesthetically pleasing. However, I am concerned that it may not be water proof.” • “I found it to aesthetically pleasing however I find there to be a lot of technical issues that should be addressed. Right now people have great ideas some practical and some not so practical, however I haven't really seen and "Central project page or progress page" right now people are scattered all over the place posting their ideas and it’s all a bit of a mess.” • “Yes more than the first model of Phonebloks.”

  8. Do you find the Ara to be aesthetically pleasing? • “It fits motorolas image, but to me the modules becomes too defined in sizes. I really like the "lego-mat" on phoneblocks phone because it makes you able to customize it exactly as you want to.”  • “I think it is beautiful but it is less modulable than Phonebloks”  • “I don't like Ara because the size and place of every block is pre-set. I prefer the idea of phonbloks because the more modular the better!” • “I don’t like colourful smartphones, also Phonebloks seems more flexible”  • “I like the fact that it is already modular but not as much as phoneblocks will be/wants to be”  • And many, many more!

  9. Do you like the idea of a modular phone? Well that is good!

  10. Do you believe this concept will help reduce electronic waste? There is some concern that having the ability to change components so easily will actually increase waste. However a cleverly designed web store should eliminate these problems.

  11. Would you replace your current phone with a modular phone if one became available?

  12. How soon would you change? • A large percentage (94%) would buy a modular phone within the first year of sale.
