DNA Deoxyribonucleic Acid
Functions of DNA • It stores and used information to direct cell activities. • Controls the production of proteins. • It copies itself exactly for new cells.
DNA Structure • Double Helix- two long strands of nucleotides.
Nucleotides have 3 parts • Sugar (Deoxyribose) • Phosphate group • A nitrogen base
Nitrogen Base can be 1 of 4 • Adenine • Guanine • Thymine • Cytosine
Base Pairs • Adenine pairs w/ Thymine (A-T) • Guanine pairs w/ Cytosine (G-C)
DNA Replication • DNA makes a copy of itself. • Replication Process • Double helix unwinds • Base pairs are broken apart • Each single strand of parent DNA acts like a template. • The new strand is made from free floating nucleotides. • An enzyme called DNA Polymerase matches that bases. • DNA molecules have formed.
