Spur Gears • Used to increase or decrease the torque of a mechanical object • Each straight tooth projects directly from the center of the gear and must fit perfectly into the shaft of the complementary gear in order to work efficiently • They create a lot of noise due to the teeth colliding • Generally used in blenders, clothes driers and construction equipment and airplane engines
Worm Gears • Worm gears have a curved teeth with shallow angles and the worm is a curved and twisted rod that moves the gear • Worm shafts can reduce the spinning of the gear greatly • The worm shaft is capable of easily moving the gear, but the gear is unable to move the shaft • Worm gears are generally used in windup toys, watches and music boxes, as well as cars and machine heads
Crown Gears • Crown gears have triangular teeth on one side • Each tooth is formed by two edges coming out at a 90 degree angle from the base of the gear, forming isosceles triangles • Crown gears are generally used in cars, rotating shaft cam switches and many more mechanical contraptions
Rotary and Linear Motion • Rotary motion is the circular movement of an object around a single, fixed axis • Linear motion is the movement of an object from one place to another in a straight line
