  4. AEP’s Work in Africa • Grassroots approach • Works in Kafue, Zambia

  5. AEP Achievements in Zambia • Distribution of 10,000 Schoolbooks to 6 Schools • Distribution of 10,000 Library Books to 1 Youth Center and 2 Orphanages • Distribution of 70 Computers to various communities • Sponsorship of 80 orphans for school • Opening of a Youth Community Center • Providing critical daily programs (meals, HIV/AIDS awareness, education)

  6. Zambia Facts • An underdeveloped country located in Sub-Saharan Africa • Population: 10 million with half of the population under the age of 18 • 68 Percent of the population live on less than one dollar per day • In 2005, the life expectancy was estimated at 37 years

Zambia The Need for Education • 85 percent of the children attend elementary school • Education is free until Grade 8 • Due to lack of available seats in public schools, students attend on a part-time basis (morning or afternoon shift) for grades 1 through 12 • Only 41% of Girls and 48 % of Boys enter Grade 8 • Only 21 percent of girls and 27 percent of boys attend high school • Only 5 percent of High School graduates will attend college

  8. Zambia The HIV/AIDS Pandemic • 25 percent of the adult population is infected with HIV/AIDS • 98,000 died of HIV/AIDS in 2005 • One million children are HIV/AIDS orphans • In 2010, 1-in-3 Children will be an HIV/AIDS Orphan • A Significant Percentage of Children are HIV/AIDS Positive

  9. The AEP Solution • Sponsor HIV/AIDS orphans to attend school • Create a place for the youth which becomes another learning resource • Supplement limited educational public schools system

  10. AEP Milestone In August 2006, AEP opened the Amos Youth Centre providing an educational environment for underprivileged children and promoting HIV/AIDS awareness

  11. The Amos Youth Centre Located in the Shikoswe District, one of the most poverty stricken areas in the town of Kafue Open to all youths aged 7 to 25. Several hundred children participate daily or weekly in a variety of programs.

  12. The Amos Youth Centre Library With 1,000 Schoolbooks and 3,000 readers Computer Lab 9 stations are installed for students to learn basic computer skills and to access the Internet.

  13. Programs at the Center Before and After School Programs English Speaking, Reading and Writing Program Career Guidance Computer Classes

  14. The Breakfast Club Serving approximately 50 meals each school day.

  15. HIV/AIDS Awareness • Programs to promote HIV/AIDS awareness • Focus on prevention sexual education and breaking the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS • Psychological and social counseling

  16. Youth Activities The Drama Group Singing and sketches emphasize HIV/AIDS awareness. The JETS Club The JETS Club (Junior Engineering and Technical Society) organizes competitions on Math, English, and Sciences. The Soccer Team

  17. A Meeting Place Open until 10:00 PM Friday and Saturday Evening This helps keep the members off the streets and out of trouble.

  18. AEP Scholarships AEP selects HIV/AIDS orphans, members of the Amos Youth Centre who deserve to continue their schooling. 2007 School Year:AEP sponsored 25 HIV/AIDS Orphans 2008 School Year:AEP sponsored 46 HIV/AIDS orphans for grades 8 through 12 and 7 orphans for college
