  1. Schedule… Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  2. Small and Simple Alma 37:6 6 Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise. Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  3. Lecture 1 – Fundamentals of Electrical Circuits Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  4. Important Concepts • Ideal/Dependent voltage sources • Ideal/Dependent current sources • Electrical Networks • Branches • Nodes • Loops • Meshes Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  5. Ideal Voltage Sources • An electric device that generates a prescribed voltage • Provides a prescribed voltage across its terminals irrespective of the current flowing through it. The amount of current supplied by the source is determined by the circuit connected to it Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  6. + + vs(t) vs(t) _ _ Ideal Voltage Sources • Time-dependent voltage source • Voltage as a function of time t • Lowercase vusually connotes AC source i Circuit Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  7. + + vs(t) vs(t) ~ _ _ Ideal Voltage Sources • Time-dependent voltage source – special case: sinusoidal • Voltage as a function of time t • IE: vs(t) = Vcos(ωt) • Lowercase v usually connotes AC source i Circuit Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  8. + Vs _ Ideal Voltage Sources • DC voltage source • Voltage is not a function of time • Capital V connotes DC voltage • DC voltage source example: a battery i A generic voltage is denoted by just a lowercase v + v Circuit _ Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  9. i i Source Load + + + v v _ Vs R + - Light Battery _ _ Ideal Voltage Sources • Source-load representation Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  10. Ideal Current Sources • An electric device that generates a prescribed current • Provides a prescribed current to any circuit connected to it. The voltage generated by the source is determined by the circuit connected to it. Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  11. Ideal Current Sources • Lowercase i connotes AC current • Capital I connotes DC current is, Is + vs is,Is Circuit _ Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  12. + _ Dependent (Controlled) Sources • Diamond shaped source indicates dependent source • Dependent sources are an important part of amplifiers vs is Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  13. R1 + R2 _ Vs2 + _ Vs1 R4 R3 R5 Electrical Network • A collection of elements through which current flows Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  14. R1 i + + Branch current R2 _ Vs2 + _ Vs1 R4 Branch voltage v R3 _ R5 Electrical Network - Branches • Any portion of a circuit with two terminals connected to it. • May consist of one or more circuit elements Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  16. + _ Vs2 Node + _ Vs1 Electrical Network - Nodes • The junction of two or more branches • Trivial Node: the junction of only two branches R1 R2 R4 R3 R5 Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  17. + _ Vs2 Node + _ Vs1 R2 R4 R3 R5 Electrical Network - Nodes • The junction of two or more branches • Trivial Node: the junction of only two branches Node a Node b R1 Node c Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  18. Supernode + _ Vs2 + _ Vs1 R2 R4 R3 R5 Electrical Network – Supernodes • Obtained by defining a region that encloses more than one node • Can be treated the exact same way as normal nodes R1 Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  19. + R2 Vs2 _ R4 + Vs1 _ R3 R5 Electrical Network – Loops • Any enclosed connection of branches R1 Discussion #1 – Fundamentals

  20. + R2 Vs2 _ R4 + Vs1 _ R3 R5 Electrical Network – Meshes • A loop that does not contain other loops R1 Discussion #1 – Fundamentals
