  2. What is a Genre? • A distinct or certain type of book

  4. Fiction vs. nonfiction

  5. Realistic Fiction—Sports, adventure, and Humor • A story using made-up characters that takes place in modern times.

  6. Realistic fiction-Mystery • A suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not solved until the end of the story

  7. Historical Fiction • A fictional story with real and invented characters that takes place during a historical time • Characteristics • Contains historical accuracy • Takes place in the past • Includes language that represents that time and place • Illustrations are historically accurate

  8. Modern Fantasy-Science fiction • A story that blends futuristic technology with scientific fact and fiction.

  9. Traditional Fantasy-Folk Tales • Tales that expresses rituals, traditions, and beliefs of common people. • Story was initially passed on by word of mouth. • Examples: • The Three Pigs • The Three Bears • Gingerbread Boy • Little Red Riding Hood

  10. Types of Folk Tales • Trickster Tale: has one character called a trickster because it is clever and devious. The trickster causes problems for other people and is usually punished. • Fables: short stories that teach a lesson or moral. Usually the story has animals that speak and act like human beings. • Pourquoi Stories: explain why something is as it is or how things came to be. • Fairy Tales: see next slide

  11. Fairy Tales • Takes place long ago • Magical characters, events, or places • Lesson or “moral” for reader • Characters are good or bad • Good wins over evil • Look for number-3 • Examples • Sleeping Beauty • Cinderella • Snow White • Hansel and Gretel

Tall Tales • Is a fictional story about a hero that stretches the truth. • The hero is exaggerated and given larger than life qualities. • Remember characteristics of a tall tale by the word TALE: • T-trickery or cleverness used by the main character • A-is for the main character’s adventure in our country’s westward expansion • L-is for larger than life qualities of the main character • E-is for exaggeration used in the story to make it entertaining

Nonfiction-informational text • Contains ideas, facts, and principles relating to topics • Primary purpose—communicate information • Kinds of Text: concept, identification/field guide, photo essay, life-cycle, experiment/activity/how to do, documents/journals/diaries/albums, survey, reference, storybooks • Text features: table of contents, glossaries, appendix, index, captions/illustrations/photographs, diagrams, maps, charts, time lines

Nonfiction-biography & Autobiography • Biography-the story of a real person’s life that is written by another person • Tells about a real person—past or present • Based on factual information • Includes major influences(people, places, and events) • Recounts key incidents in the person’s life • Autobiography-the story of a real person’s life that is written by that person

  15. poetry • Writing in a language chosen and arranged to create a particular emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm
