Diversity Programs • Helpful or harmful? • As public awareness increases so does the number of programs initiated • Oversimplification of the issue can intensify existing problems • Example: We “encourage” firms to hire more minorities • Result: Discrimination against majority members
The Challenge • To create justice and respect between groups of people and between individuals at a time when global migrations have intensified and new community situations have emerged. • Teach people how to work together
Objectives • Address issues of labor market discrimination • Examine the economic and societal impacts of differential treatment • Address views from individual, organizational, and societal levels • Evaluate public policies created to “help” these societal problems

Paper • You have been hired as a consultant by XYZ corporation. Your job is provide an economic analysis in the form of a memorandum of a current event that this firm is experiencing (ie. discrimination charge, reorganization, sexual harassment charge, etc.). • The report must not exceed five pages in length • Article published between October 1, 2005 and February 1, 2006 The report must be completed by May 26that 1:30 pm • Each day the report is late will result in a reduction of 10% the student can potentially receive for the paper. • If the report is turned in by May 19th at 1:30 pmyou will receive a 5% bonus on the paper. • If the report is turned in by May 12th at 1:30 pmyou will receive a 10% bonus on the paper

Stereotype examples • All boys are better at sports than girls. • Italians only eat spaghetti. • The only thing African Americans can do is play sports. • Only gay people get AIDS. • All Mexican Americans are in gangs. • All Asians are good at math. • All blondes are dumb. • Other examples???? Does the media play a part?
