What is “Research” • University of Saskatchewan = RSAW • Research, Scholarly and Artistic Work • Research in which practice is the central focus • Practice-based: a creative artefact is the basis of the contribution to knowledge • Practice-led: leads to new understandings about the nature of practice

  4. What is “Research” - 2 • UK Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB) – research is a process • Defines a series of problems/questions • Specifies a research context • Methods used to address questions • The process is common to all types of research • Focus on similarities not differences

  5. Indicators of Impact • Average grant size in discipline relative to national average • Career paths of graduate students • Exhibitions (solo or group) • Expert consultations • Book publication – editing, authorship • Economic impact/growth

  6. Indicators of Impact - 2 • Invited presentations at national & international meetings • National and international research collaborations • Theatrical, film, TV performance • Performance (solo) or premiere/performance of composition

Indicators of Impact - 3 • Impact of research on cultural and/or educational policy, practice or curriculum • Contribution to service facilities, community organizations, public debate • Reprint, translation, or performance by others of published work • Participation on National Review Committees, etc

Building Capacity • Creating the environment • Strategy • Creating opportunities to talk • Creating a common language • Finding new ways of “measuring” • Showcasing success • Structure • Mandate of and representation on internal committees • Flexibility in the system (ie, tenure and promotion)

  9. Building Capacity- 2 • People • Serving on committees • Sharing ideas • Sharing examples of success • Communications Offices • Creating opportunities for students and for student supervision • Public recognition to increase visibility

  10. Funding • SSHRC? • CURA (Community University Research Alliance) • RDI (Research Development Initiatives) • ITST (Image, Text, Sound and Technology) • Research/Creation (every 2 years?)

  11. Funding - 2 • SSHRC’s idea: have creative work funded by all strategic programs • Educating peer review committees • Revising application formats and guidelines • Examining funding criteria • We need to work with SSHRC Leaders to ensure that impact is understood

  12. Celebrating Success • SSHRC Recognition Events – invite your university leaders • New Faculty Events • Update your VP Research – keep SSHRC and Fine Arts on the table • Remember that interest is found in other disciplines

  13. Celebrating Success - 2 • Community relationships including representation on university committees • Awareness of and nominations to local celebrations and events • Communications (internal and external)
