July 2017 LCCU MeetingResize Image in Pixels • Using GIMP, load image & select “Image”, “Scale Image”. Enter pixels desired. • Using Picasa, select image and select “File”, “Export Picture to Folder”, enter pixels. • Using IrfanView, open image, select “Image”, “Resize/Resample”. • Using Paint.net, open image, select “Image”, “Resize”. • Note – get all but Picasa from www.ninite.com.

July 2017 LCCU MeetingWindows 10/7 Backup Strategy • AskLeo’s 3-2-1 Backup Strategy: • Get an external drive at least 4X as large as the data on your hard drive. • Get backup software to create system image backups weekly or monthly. He recommends Macrium Reflect or EaseusTodo, but you can use the Windows software. • Backup (sync) data online. Use Microsoft OneDrive (5 GB free), Dropbox (2GB free) or others. • Note – Leo has books on using the above software.
July 2017 LCCU MeetingWindows 10/7 Backup Strategy • Judy’s 3-2-1 Backup Strategy: • Get an external hard drive: I have a 1 TB Seagate external drive. Data on hard drive is 157 GB, x 4 = 628 GB. • Use backup software to create system image backups weekly: AOMEI Backupper. • Backup data online: Idrive, 5GB free; 1 TB for $52.12 currently, normally $69.50. Other choices are Crashplan (free offsite backup to friend/family’s PC, $) & Backblaze ($50/yr.)

July 2017 LCCU MeetingWindows 10 PC Restored to 7? • Considerations • Microsoft extended support & security updates for Windows 7 ends 1/14/2020, in 2 1/2 years. Will you want to switch to Windows 10 then? • Are you staying with Windows 7 due to software that is not Windows 10 compatible? If so, is there compatible software that can replace it?
July 2017 LCCU MeetingWindows 10 PC Restored to 7? • Procedure • Make an image backup of the Windows 10 computer first, and make a boot disk, in case an unforeseen problem occurs. • Download Windows 7 drivers for your PC. • Use the Home version of AOMEI backupper that can restore to a different device to save the Windows 7 PC. Verify that it's a good backup. • Find out the Windows 7 & 10 product keys.

December 2016 LCCU MeetingWindows 10 File History • By default, it will back up Documents, Pictures, Desktop, Downloads, OneDrive, Music and Video folders, but you can add add or exclude folders. • Back up to an external drive or network drive. • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Backup, and under “Backup using file history”, select “Add a drive”, and select your drive. This will turn on “Automatically back up my files”. • Select “More options” to configure.
December 2016 LCCU MeetingWindows 10 File History • “More options” to configure: • How often – default is every hour; choices range from every 10 minutes to daily. • For how long – default is forever, but choices range from 1 month to 2 years or when space is needed. • Which folders – exclude some defaults or add others. • Change backup drive – click “Stop using drive”, then “Add a drive”. It can only be configured to backup to one drive at a time. • Advanced settings – allow other PCs on network
December 2016 LCCU MeetingWindows 10 File History • Restore from File History: • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Backup and under “Backup using file history” “More options”, select “Restore personal files”. Files saved on another computer can be restored as well. • You can restore previous versions. For a given folder, you can restore deleted files.

April 2017 LCCU MeetingWindows 10 Recovery Options • Bad recently installed app, driver or update • Do system restore – go to Control Panel, Recovery. • Not working well, don’t know why • Reset PC, select “keep my files” (lose desktop apps). • Clear off data and donate or recycle PC • Reset PC, select ‘remove everything”. • Your PC won’t start • Use recovery drive or installation media and system image backup to restore or recover the PC.

June 2017 LCCU MeetingSync Chrome Bookmarks • In Chrome on PC • Click triple dots at upper right, Settings • Sign in to Chrome with your Google account • Click “Advanced Sync settings”, and “Choose what to sync”. Uncheck things you don’t want. • In Chrome on phone • Touch 3-dot button, Settings, & your email address. Tap “Sync” and sync everything, or select data types. • In Chrome’s menu select “Bookmarks” to check sync.

June 2017 LCCU MeetingLastpass on Android phone • Using LastPass on Android: • Install from Google app store; sign in to LastPass or create an account. Free on phone, $12 for Premium to use on PC too or to share passwords. • Use to fill passwords in Android apps and in Chrome websites. • Share individual passwords or folders of passwords. • Use the LastPass Android browser, Dolphin HD to create & use form-filling profiles. • Includes a legacy tool called Emergency Access.
June 2017 LCCU MeetingLastpass on Android phone • Using LastPass on Android: • Caveat – Using autofill to fill passwords in apps and Chrome websites uses the O/S clipboard, and is subject to sniffing by rogue software, according to a 2014 article by ArsTechnica. To avoid this, use the LastPass browser “Dolphin HD” or the LastPass keyboard.
