SPI 0807.12.2 Electromagnets Bell Work Science Tuesday, February 22, 2017 • What are magnetic poles? • Which poles attract each other; which repel? • Where is the magnetic south pole located on earth? • What is the difference between a permanent magnet and a temporary magnet?
SPI 0807.12.2 Electromagnets Notes Science Tennessee SPI Objective: Describe the basic principles of an electromagnet. Essential Question(s) 1) What are the components of electromagnets? 2) How do I vary the strength of an electromagnet? I Can Statement I can describe how to build an electromagnet. Success Criteria I can prove that I understand this topic by designing a simple electromagnet.
Electromagnets • An electromagnet consists of a solenoid wrapped around an iron core attached to a source of electricity Simple Electromagnet Iron Core Source of Electricity Solenoid • F.Y.I. -Electric current in the wire produces a magnetic field which lines up atoms in the domains of the iron core forming an electromagnet.
SPI 0807:12.2 Electromagnets Notes Science F.Y.I: Why Are Some Substances Magnetic? • All atoms have magnetic fields with north and south poles • Atoms in objects are found in areas called domains. • If the north and south poles in a domain line up, this makes the object magnetic. If they don’t line up, the object is not magnetic.
Solenoid Iron Core Source of Electricity Electromagnets can be turned on and off as needed You can adjust the strength of an electromagnet two ways 2) Increase the number of coils 1) Increase the electrical current
