  1. The Inspection Process Special Schools&Education Other Than At School

  2. Initial contact • Two weeks prior to the inspection • Receive notification • Reporting inspector makes contact

  3. Pre inspection day • Reporting inspector visits • Meets with the principal/leader • Offer of role of the representative and joint lesson observations (special schools) • Discusses development plan priorities • Meets with staff 

  4. Documentation • Returned to ISB prior to the inspection • Available for the pre-inspection visit • Available in the base room during the inspection • Available in each classroom during the inspection • Data

  5. Day 1 • Principal/leader meets ETI team • Principal and governor meeting • Observation of lessons • Selection of pupils for the discussion group • Attend any requested meeting e.G. Parents • Scrutiny of the documentation • Meeting with the designated teacher safeguarding proforma • Meetings with middle managers/co-ordinators • Team meeting, attended by representative.

  6. Day 2 • Meeting with principal/leader • Update team meeting • Pupil discussions • Lesson observations • Scrutiny of the school documentation in the base room throughout the day • Meetings with middle management/co-ordinators • Team meeting attended by representative

  7. Meetings • Pupils • Principal/Leader and governors • Senior managers • Middle managers

  8. Day 3 • Morning • Meeting with principal • Update team meeting; • Lesson observations; • Scrutiny of the school documentation • Afternoon • Moderation of evidence • ETI team and representative • Running record findings and lesson analysis and evidence discussed • Main findings

  9. Day 4 Based on the evidence and moderation from day 3 the report is brought together and written, It may be used if necessary for a further moderation meeting if issues remain undecided or work not fully complete. No requirement for the principal to attend but may be invited.

  10. Day 5 Reporting inspector and deputy reporting inspector report orally the key findings of the inspection to the principal, senior leaders, chair/representative of the governors, representative of the employing authority and other relevant stakeholders at the discretion of the organisation.
