The Library of Congress offers a service to libraries and publishers to create metadata records for e-books. This pilot program aims to provide publisher-neutral e-monograph MARC records based on information from the original publisher. The program adds variable and standard data elements to identify the item as an e-book. Participating publishers must meet certain requirements, including marketing to libraries, simultaneous publication of print and e-books, and submitting a complimentary copy to the Library. The program assigns a unique LCCN to each e-book application and collects data elements for record creation. The pilot phase involves reviewing records, correcting errors, and distributing records to customers. Future steps include transferring published e-books to the Library of Congress, developing combined CIP data for print and e-books, and expanding the program to more publishers.
