  2. The word, Technician, comes from the Greek, tékhnē, meaning skill or craft. The word, Scientist, comes from the Latin scientia, meaning knowledge.

Comes in whenever he feels like it Often breaks equipment Always operates at the last minute Is a bad communicator Is a very impractical person Gives me no credit Thinks he’s a cut above us Pretends to be working at home Often talks a lot of rubbish Thinks teaching is a waste of time Never puts in a leave form Has no idea about the budget

A TECHNICIAN (Applying Knowledge): • One who is methodical and persistent; • One who has practical knowledge and experience of scientific applications and techniques; • One who can use and maintain scientific instruments; • One who can develop new techniques and instruments based on scientific principles; • One who has the knowledge to apply and test scientific ideas; • One who develops new applications from scientific principles.

A SCIENTIST (Seeking Theory): • One who seeks new ideas to explain phenomena; • One who may see no immediate need for a practical application; • One who is aware of serendipity; • One who may value novel ideas over the truth; • One who is often impractical and more interested in philosophy; • One who is tolerant and playful; • One who tries to test theory with elegant experiments; • One who seems unworldly and unrealistic; • One who is intellectually ambitious and publication-obsessed.
