Identifying traits of Science Fiction • A setting in the future, in alternative time lines, or in a historical past that changes facts from history or the archeological record. • A setting in outer space, on other worlds, or involving aliens • Stories that involve technology or scientific principles that contradict known laws of nature. • Stories that involve the discovery of new scientific principles, such as time travel, robotics, faster-than-light travel, and nanotechnology.
Types of Science Fiction • Apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction is concerned with the end of civilization through nuclear war, plague, or other worldwide catastrophic event. • Feminist science fiction explores societies in which gender differences or gender power imbalances do not exist. • Science fiction Westerns occur in the past, or in a world resembling the past, in which modern or future technologies exist. • Space operas emphasize romantic adventures where opponents possess powerful weapons and abilities and wage large scale battles for domination of cultures across the universe.
