"Through the Bible" Week 52 • The Final Read
Why is it so hard for us to maintain a faithful practice of reading God's Word and/or spending time with God each day in prayer?
Reading the Bible isn't always fun, or, for that matter, easy.
We have become unclear about the difference between the soul and the spirit.
Jesus Himself likened God's Word to bread when, quoting from Deuteronomy 8:3, He said to the tempter, Satan, "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:4)
Bible reading and personal prayer can be compared to physical exercise.
There are important messages at the conclusion of each of the four areas from which we have been reading all year, Psalms, Proverbs, Old Testament and New Testament.
Psalms 150 - the last of the "Hallelujah Psalms" gives this final exhortation: "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Hallelujah."
We have breath, and we know where it came from, so we praise God. • We come to church to "Praise the Lord and Preach His Word."
Proverbs is a message for the young, it places high value on wisdom which is based on fear of God which in turn leads to obedience and consequently doing what is right, in our relationships, home life, work, justice, attitudes, and • reactions.
Proverbs 31 is an alphabetic, acrostic poem extolling the woman of virtue.
"Malachi" means "my messenger" • "See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me." (3:1)
"Then those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name." (3:16)
"He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse." (4:6)
The end of the last book, Revelation, is especially pertinent for the New Year with its prophecy concerning the new heaven and new earth, the promise of a New Jerusalem.
The New Jerusalem is like a "bride beautifully dressed for her husband." (21:2) • "the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them." (21:3) • In this Holy City no evil will be known and shines with the glory of God (21:11, 12)
This city will be 1,380 miles in all directions, length, width and height. • The New Jerusalem will be 40 times larger than the entire United States - almost three times the size of our present world!
"Yes, I am coming soon." And we answer back, "Amen. • Come, Lord Jesus." (21:21)
Four Final Truths: • As long as we have life and breath, we must continue to Praise the Lord. • Women of noble character deserve our admiration and encouragement. • Our belief in the coming of Messiah enables us to restore broken relationships. • We can look forward with great hope, longing for the coming of the Lord and eternal citizenship in the New Jerusalem, the Holy City of God.
