Lab Norms 1. Be responsible. 2. Follow ALL instructions carefully. 3. Please avoid touching any equipment, chemicals, or other materials in the laboratory area until you are instructed to do so. 4. Avoid eating food, drinking beverages, or chewing gum in the laboratory. 5. Dress properly during a laboratory activity : safety goggles, lab coats, long hair tied back, no sandals, no dangling jewelry.

Bellringer • Raheem is investigating the properties of several substances. He prepared a beaker containing substances J, K, and L and used filter paper to filter the contents through a funnel into a flask. Materials • 1. Mixture in cup A 4. Wire mesh • 2. Mixture in cup B 5. 3 filter papers • 3. Mixture in cup C 6. 3 empty cups
Hypothesis A good hypothesis will be presented as a cause and effect relationship IF…….Then IF I pour the contents of cup A through the wire mesh THEN ……….
Explore Procedures: 1. Discuss with students the contents in each cup and how to complete the data table • You may want to combine the substances with the students to aide in solidification of concept.
Procedures 2. Look at cup A Describe the mixture in the data table. Repeat this step with cup B and cup C 3. Now we’re going to try and separate the mixtures. Put the wire mesh over one of the empty cups. 4. Pour the contents of cup A over the cup with the wire mesh. Observe what happens and record your observations on the data table.
Procedures 5. If the mixture did not separate, put one filter cup over A and pour the contents of the cup back into cup A. Record your observations in the data table. 6. Repeat steps 3-5 for cup B. Record you observations in the data table. Then do the same for cup C
Collecting Data Data is the information gathered during an experiment. Sometimes data involves counting or measurements such as length. Data that involves numbers or measurements should be organized in a table. Once the data has been collected from the experiment, it must be analyzed, or a decision about what the data means is drawn.
