April 18th, 1906 • Mt. Vesuvius erupts, devastating Naples, Italy, 7 days prior to the quake. • Musician Luis Alberti was born the day after.
1906 Women’s Men’s • High collared shirts, occasionally worn with neckties. • Long, floor length skirts. • Huge, broad brimmed hats. • Cutaway morning coat, high buttoned waistcoat, & high collared shirt. • Creased fly-front trousers. • Top hat, and gloves.
The Earthquake • Modern estimates say magnitude was about 8.25. • Main shock epicenter occurred about 2 miles from the city.
The Earthquake • Ruptured along the San Andreas Fault, northward and southward, for 296 miles. • Shaking was felt from Oregon to Los Angeles.
Subsequent Fires • Up to 90%of damages done were from the fires that followed the earthquake. • These fires burned for fourdays and nights.
Dents in Population • 3,000+ fatalities, 227,000-300,000 were left homeless out of a 410,000 population. • Refugee camps were still in full operation in 1908.
Army Aid • Soldiers were called to assist firefighters and accommodate the “displaced”. • Redwood and fir cottages replaced temporary tents for the homeless.
Reconstruction & Losses • Property and insurance losses equivalent to a combined total of $635+ million. • Reconstruction of the city completed in 1915.

Richter Scales • Measured by a richter magnitude scale. • Quantities the seismic energy released by an earthquake.
Fault Lines • Earthquakes occur from fault lines, which result from tectonic forces. • A strike-slip fault caused the San Fran Earthquake.
Earthquake Predictions • Scientists cannot predict earthquakes, and have tried many times. • Can predict where they’ll happen, just not when.
