Amputation: Basics • “One in 190 Americans is currently living with the loss of a limb” (Zeigler-Graham, MacKenzie, Emphraim, Travison, & Brookmeyer 2008) • Can be congenital or acquired-this aspect of mobility disabilities factors into a person’s attitude towards their disability as Mackelprang and Salsgiver explain (see pages 194-195 for more information)-this also reminds us that each patron is individual and should be consulted to determine needs and accommodations

Amputation: Combating Assumptions • “The human-built world is never viewed as the cause of people’s problems-it is always the disability” (Mackelprang and Salsgiver, 2009). • “People assume that terms such as person with a disability and disabled person are synonymous with ‘I need help’”(Mackelprang and Salsgiver, 2009).
