Reliability Type 3 Reliability (Hitler)
Type 3 Reliability When all sources point towards one erroneous viewpoint. So what then must you do?
Structure of answer • Establish your stand (Answer the question directly) • Despite the similarity in stance, still need to cross refer Source B to other sources. Show how they reinforce each other. • Need to show WHY other sources back Source B. • Bring in background (given) and contextual knowledge to argue against the interpretation expressed by all 4 sources
Contextual knowledge • Hitler’s previously stated aims: E.g. Lebenstraum in the east + Dismantling TOV: Suggest that Poland was under threat. Polish corridor had separated Western and Eastern Prussia. (Contradictory statements made. Cannot be trusted) • His actions prior to Munich agreement: Expansionary, previously asked for Sudentenland, now asking for the whole of Czechoslovakia, therefore not to be trusted. (Bad track record, cannot be trusted) • Expansion of German military. Especially of the airforce. Is it necessary to build up a massive airforce if it is just to regain neighbouring lands? (actions running counter to words, cannot be trusted)
Key take-aways for Reliability • Intro: Always establish a firm stand. (Not reliable. Or Reliable) • Always must cross-refer to other sources • Bring in relevant contextual knowledge • Always expose the hidden agenda/deal with purpose. • Conclusion: Reiterate intro.
