Programme Purpose & Objectives Reduce the disease burden in Southern Africa by increasing access to affordable, essential medicines. Inception phase: Strengthen SADC capacity and demonstrate the value of a regional approach.

SADC Pharmaceutical Business Plan2007-2013 • Harmonize STGs & EMLs • Rationalize & maximize research & production capacity of generic & African Traditional Meds • Strengthen Regulatory Capacity • Promote Joint Procurement • Regional database of Traditional Meds • Develop & retain competent human resources • Respond to emergency pharma needs • Coordinate implementation of TRIPS flexibilities
Phased Delivery • Pre-Inception (October 09 – Jan 10) • Work planning for Inception Phase • DFID MoU with SADC Secretariat/ June 2010 • Inception Phase (9 Months from 15 Jan 10) • Establish networks • Start support for implementing SADC PBP • Intensive data collection: PMA, STG study • Build the Business case (including Cost-benefit Analysis) • Detailed implementation planning for Inception Report ------------- GO/NO-GO DECISION BY DFID -------------- • Implementation Phase
