Who are we? Tim; • Paralympic Head Coach working for ArcheryGB-Performance Unit since 2006. Remit-Paralympic Archery Performance from Talent Identification thru to Elite and Podium level. Over 40 Medals and Numerous World Champions and records in last 12 months • Wears a yellow Valentino Rossi Baseball cap-everywhere………… Pippa; • Paralympic archer with 11 years International experience, 6 consecutive World Championship medals, 3 World records & #2 in the World.
The Basics • Awareness & Understanding • Stance/Chair position • Balance • Alignment • Bow Hand • Hook • Reference • Back Tension • Follow through
Stance • AB • As per previous talks regarding technique at this conference • PARA • Chair or stool set up in same way-Open/Closed/Parallel • Mark footplate of chair with tape to align with shooting line. • Maintain good posture
Alignment • AB • As per previous talks regarding technique at this conference • PARA • OptimumAlignment is paramount physiological/muscular/skeletal reasons may inhibit perfect alignment • optimum position must be sought. • Pain and discomfortwill over-rule alignment . • S&C can and does improve balance/ range of movement.
Balance • AB • As per previous talks regarding technique at this conference • PARA • Core strength and available muscle usage varies with individual. • Bow “wants” to pull archer over. Light riser/Equip will help. • Chair modification can and does help-underseat boards, higher side plates, bucket and back angle readjustment
Bow Hand • AB • As per previous talks regarding technique at this conference • PARA • Bow grips can be modified if required assist where; • muscle wastage • Grip • bone alignment do not allow bow to sit correctly under drawing. • Splints/strapping etc can be used if passed by Classifier-Always check before competing.
Hook • AB • As per previous talks regarding technique at this conference • PARA • Numerous ways have been adapted to draw the bow. • Teeth-Using a piece of leather held between the back teeth • Chin operated release aids attached to solid chest guard • Maximise efficiency of movement through adaptation.
Reference • AB • As per previous talks regarding technique at this conference • PARA • Possible nerve damage causing loss of sensation. • Alignment dictates reference points in some cases. • Adapt.

Follow Through • AB • As per previous talks regarding technique at this conference • PARA • No exaggerated movements should be present during release/follow through and shot finish-Can be difficult to maintain dependant on core muscle availability/usage.
Understand...Familiarise...Adapt. • Understand who,why,what you are working with. • Familiarise yourself with challenges faced. • Adapt coaching techniques to suit situation and individual (This is good advice throughout all of your archery coaching endeavours). • Be flexible AND prepared to have a few set backs. • Be prepared to be emotionally and physically challenged. • Use experience not just text books! • We are all different with different needs & triggers- Personal Coaches/Kit etc-be aware and respect this fact.
Elite Level………The facts Each archer has a tailored programme-no “standardised” arrow volume, S&C, training schedule etc.Disability dependant recovery programme overseen by health professionals.“Winter rebuild” programme period.Allow and facilitate Central and remote support.Flexible approach to planning for performance. Competitive expectations are not limited to para archery group.
