World Archery Coaching Seminar London, GBR 8 - 11 November 2011
Coaching Structure of AGB AGB Board • Performance Unit are professional Coaches • Operations Committee are Volunteers • National Coaching Committee are Volunteers Operations Committee Performance Unit National Coaching Committee
Structure of NCC NCC Chair Tim Swane NCO Coaching Malcolm Penn 4 Voting Members NCO Education Bill Mackay • Responsible for: • Developing and delivering coach training programmes • Coaching standards & ethics • Licensing coaches • Quality and quantity of coaching in AGB • Promotion of coaching activity • Co-ordination of coaching with outside bodies
Regional Structure • 4 Home Nations • 8 Regions • 43 Counties • 300 Clubs of 10+ members
Current Challenges • Ineffective Regional Co-ordinators • Ineffective County Co-ordinators • Coach training & CPD • Out of date coaches teaching poor technique • Unlicensed coaches damaging coach status • Too many social archers • Curse of the English Longbow
Kendal Bowmen –A Typical Club • 60 Members • Shoot target & field • Share cricket field in summer • Use church hall in winter • 50% shoot barebow or longbow • 40% shoot recurve • 10% shoot compound • 2 coaches
Challenges for the Coaches • Have to work around other members • Mainly fixing equipment issues • Or fixing form problems • Often time taken up with endless beginners courses • Too many social archers after instant solutions • Un-realistic expectations of coaching • Macho archers with high draw weight.
Tim’s top “hates” (as a club coach) • I have bought this bow on ebay • Can you set it up? It is only 10 years old • I am missing the target so I will shoot barebow • My bow is too powerful to shoot closer than 50 metres • Oh dear you have made me miss • What do you mean draw to my chin • I have bought a bow little Johnnie can grow into • Agincourt!
Coaching Targets for AGB • 1 coach per 4 archers • 1 coach of at least L2 in each club of more than 10 archers • Development squad run in each County • Development squad run in each Region
Reasons • Coach numbers included inactive coaches • Coaching population ageing and retiring • Stopped training coaches whilst L2 course developed – 2 year gap. • New L2 course slowed down and reduced pass rate – now fixed • Requirement to renew every 3 years caused resignations • Insistence on CPD • Child protection rules in GBR
Way Forward • Believe we are at low point and now climbing • Easier process to renew license • CPD un coupled from coach renewal process • L2 course now fixed – but need to promote more courses • Appointment of Regional Development Employees • Training and development of County Coaching Organisers • Child protection rules will hopefully be relaxed
