  2. WAP Configuration In this section we will discuss basic Wireless Access configuration using a Linksys router running the dd-wrt firmware.

  4. Upgrading WAP to dd-wrt Firmware • DD-WRT is a third party developed firmware released under the terms of the GPL for many ieee802.11a/b/g/h/n wireless routers based on a Broadcom or Atheros chip reference design. The firmware is maintained by BrainSlayer and is hosted at dd-wrt.com. • Among other features not found in the original Linksys firmware, DD-WRT adds the following: • WDSwireless bridging/repeating protocol • Radius Authentication for more secure wireless • Advanced Quality of Service controls for bandwidth allocation • Software support for the SD-Card hardware modification.

  5. Installing dd-wrtSelect WAP Router • Go to dd-wrt.com • Click on the Router Database button

  6. Install dd-wrtSelect Firmware • Enter your router model (Linksys 54g) in the search box and press Enter. • Click on your version of your WAP Router software

  7. Install dd-wrtDownload Firmware • Click the desired firmware version and save it to your computer. • Document the path used to save the firmware files.

Multiple Access PointsConfiguration Steps • Set WAPs to same SSID and Security/key • Set WAPs to different IP addresses • First WAP – 192.168.1.1 • Second – 192.168.1.2 • Set WAPs to different Channels • Use Channels 1 – 6 – 11 • Have DHCP running on only one WAP • Disable DHCP on additional WAPs • Plug additional WAPs into same wired subnet

  15. Wireless BridgesClient Bridge  Join two wired networks by two Wireless routers building a bridge. All computers can see one another in Windows Network.

  16. Wireless BridgesClient Mode • Join two wired networks by two Wireless routers (unbridged). Computers on one wired network can not see computers on other wired network in Windows Network. • A router in Client Mode connects to another wireless Access Point (the host router). It uses its wireless connection as the WAN interface, and shares the internet connection only to the LAN ports. It is not seen as an access point by laptops or other computers scanning for AP's and does not accept wireless connections from client devices.

Wireless BridgingRepeaters • Extend the Wireless access area using a second router WIRELESSLY connected to the primary. • Extends area for wired clients also • The second WAP does not need to be connected to a wired switch as is done in setting up multiple WAPs • Repeater only mode • A wireless repeater with DHCP & NAT enabled, clients on different subnet from host AP (primary router).   18. Wireless BridgesRepeater Bridge • A wireless repeater with DHCP & NAT disabled, clients on same subnet as host AP (primary router). That is, all computers can see one another in Windows Network. • A key point is that the Repeater Bridge forms a single subnet.
