Concepts & principles of Road Safety Audit Definition: A road safety audit is a formal examination of an existing or future road or traffic project, or any project which interacts with road users, in which an independent, qualified examiner reports on the project’s accident potential and safety performance • reports only on the accident potential and safety performance of a design or an existing road • effective audit can only be done by a suitably trained, experienced, independent person or team

Austroads Guidelines • First published in 1994, jointly with Standards Australia • 2nd edition in 2002 • 3rd edition in 2009 • mainstreamed, as an integral part of Austroadsseries ‘Guide to Road Safety’ • basic reference for use throughout Australasia
SA training & accreditation course • First run 1996, for TSA • based on model course curriculum developed for FORS • further developed by Dan Fardon and myself • Since 1998, run by UniSA for DPTI (& predecessors) • strong support of DPTI (& predecessors) • assistance from CASR from 2006 • 153 accredited auditors to date • ‘on demand’ • Some recent developments ...
