Why Should I Question Splenda? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1s7w6UHmiDw • No calorie sweetener for coffee, tea, baking • “Made from sugar so it tastes like sugar” • Too good to be true?
What is Splenda? http://www.d-et.com/eng/sucralose.asp • Sucralose • Discovered in 1976 • Comes from sucrose (sugar) but chlorine is substituted for three hydrogen/oxygen molecules • Not recognized by the body as a carbohydrate • 600 times sweeter than sugar
How Safe is Splenda? • Over 20 years of evaluation • FDA approvals in 1998, 1999 • Approved for use in over 80 countries • Multiple studies found sucralose poorly absorbed (15%) • Only 2-3% metabolizes
So What’s the Problem? • Discovered while researching pesticides • No large scale human studies • Most studies conducted by manufacturers • FDA denied approval for 10 years • Studies show up to 27% not excreted • Chlorine highly toxic if broken down • Numerous side effects in case studies • Actually does contain some calories
Conclusion Trusted organizations prove Splenda is safe. Toxic chlorine may be absorbed into the body. Splenda should be used minimally, if at all.
