HELPING HANDS Michelle Payne, Alex Duran, Sarah Barrett and Mary FrostElmdale Elementary
Introduction In an attempt to accommodate the academic needs of all students, Elmdale Elementary placed “academically challenged” students in a separate group. This group was given one on one tutoring to increase their academic proficiency. Our EAST/EMPACTS Intro to Ed team collaborated with Elmdale Elementary and served as special tutors to this group of students.
Special Group Rationale To teach a child you have to start at the emotional level and grow into the cognitive level. When a teacher has a classroom full of twenty-five or more children unfortunately there will be a child that is going to be overlooked. The children that are usually overlooked are the ones who can not afford to be overlooked. They need that special one on one relationship. That is what our group is promoting in our EAST service learning project. Our group chose to tutor at Elmdale elementary school. We paid attention to the “low” students.
Project Overview • Assessed the needs of an area school. • Coordinated with school faculty and administration to meet needs of a specific classroom. • Collaborated with 5th grade teacher in determining the specific needs of targeted students. • Met the specific tutorial needs of individual students.
outcomes • Students were able to go above and beyond their current level. • One on one gave students the freedom to fully express themselves. • More students were reached and material was covered while we provided task-oriented guidance to other students. • Extended our understanding self as a learner and future teacher.
Skills Developed • Insight to the structure of a classroom and its diversity among the students. • Obtained effective teaching skills and methods for the struggling students • Higher order of communication skills • Time management • We utilized a variety of resources for our PowerPoint and brochure.
Our Method • Spent time tutoring students. • Struggling students were our main focus. • Helped students understand subject matter through questions and examples. • Relationships were built with teachers and students leading to a successful outcome.
Future Projects Elmdale Elementary would welcome any person willing to give their time to help tutor their students. The school is at a disadvantage due to the lower income and any positive inspiration for the students would be beneficial for a brighter future.
