TSUNAMIS A tsunami is a giant wave or series of waves created by an undersea earthquake, volcanic eruption or landslide. The length of a tsunami may be a hundred miles , can reach up to 100 feet in height and can reach speeds exceeding 500 miles per hour.
HURRICANES A hurricane is a tropical storm with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles per hour or more. The eye of a storm is usually 20-30 miles wide and may extend over 400 miles. The dangers of a storm include torrential rains, high winds and storm surges.
DROUGHTS Adrought is a period of unusually dry weather that lasts long enough to cause environmental or economic problems. For example crop damage and water supply shortages. Droughts are classified by using the Palmer Drought Severity Index. The PDSI categorizes droughts into five different levels of severity. Abnormally Dry Drought-Moderate Drought-Severe Drought-Extreme Drought-Exceptional
TORNADOS A tornado is a violent rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. Most tornados form from thunderstorms. Warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico and cool, dry air from Canada is needed to create the instability in the atmosphere needed to create a tornado. Tornadoes are measured based on their estimated wind speed which is determined by the amount of damage done. They are assigned an EF rating on the Fuji scale from an EF0 at 65 mph all the way up to an EF5 at 200 mph or greater.
FLOODS A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land. Natural floods can be caused by hurricanes, cyclones, or tsunamis and by the overflow of large volumes of water from oceans, lakes and rivers. Manmade floods are caused by poor dams and deforestation.
