Natural Disasters By: Raymon Hughes Joselyn Barron Enrique Rodriguez
They Poured fire on us from the sky While reading this book we came across a couple of examples that relate to natural disasters violating human rights. One of these examples was the flooding in the Gilo River. This violated their rights because they weren’t able to cross the river to be safe. Many of them lost their lives because they couldn’t cross the river safely.
Lightning Strikes Another example we came across while reading the book was when lightning struck houses and destroyed them. The people living in these houses could not control it and many of them lost their homes because of this natural disaster.
Famine Towards the end of the book Victims from the war were part of a big famine and couldn’t get food or water. They were not able to eat and most of them starved to death. Among these victims were children who starved to death and were not able to reach their destination.
Oil spill In the Gulf of Mexico Not only did we find examples of natural disasters violating human rights in the book. We also found out that a lot of this is happening in real life. For example, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico hurt many sea creatures and effected the jobs of people like fishers.
Earthquake in Haiti A huge earthquake struck Haiti a couple of months ago and caused major destruction. Many people were killed and severely hurt, houses were lost, schools were destroyed, and many people lost their families. Kids needed healthcare but were not able to get it.
Tornado A disastrous Tornado hit in Denver, Colorado. Many twisters touched the floor of highway 96 and destroyed some of it. This tornado destroyed some houses near the highway.
Volunteering Something we can do to help is that we can give time to help. We can join groups that strive to help the victims of the horrible situation.
Donate You can also help by donating money and supplies to rebuild the community that has been destroyed. You can donate things such as money for their expenses, food for the homeless, blankets, and clothes for them to keep.
Support The last way you can help is by supporting the victims as much as you can in many different ways. You can support them and let them know that they are not alone.
