Service & Citizenship Pin Oak NJHS members serve the school and community in many ways through individual and group service projects. Leadership & Character Student officers are elected among their fellow NJHS members to lead the chapter. Representatives from Pin Oak NJHS participate in leadership conferences and other activities, in Texas and throughout the country, in order to enhance their character and increase their leadership potential. Additionally, NJHS members are leaders among the Pin Oak student body at large, leading by example in their performance both in and out of the classroom, by their character and by their commitment to making the Pin Oak community a better place. • Member Requirements: • 20 service hours per year • Attend Meetings • $10 in membership dues • NJHS Meetings: • On Club Days during Advocacy • Every first Wednesday after school • Additional meetings as needed (for service projects, fundraisers etc) • How do I become a member? • Letters of invitation are sent to rising 7th and 8th grade students who meet the scholarship criteria in the late spring and/or early fall. Students may then complete a brief application, which includes signatures from two teachers who agree to write letters of recommendation on behalf of the student. Completed applications must then be submitted to the NJHS Advisor by the posted deadline. Souperbowl of Caring This school-wide drive, sponsored by NJHS, provided 208 food items, 78 toiletry items, 102 items of clothing, 30 toys, books & other items, as well as over $225 to the local Star of Hope Mission. LEAD Conference This was an amazing and memorable experience for NJHS members who attended this exciting leadership conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Cards for Service Members NJHS members sent hand-made holiday cards to deployed service members and submitted cards online via the “Let’s Say Thanks” program. Induction Ceremony New members were inducted into the NJHS at a special ceremony. $2,000 in 2 minutes NJHS members organized and promoted this fundraiser for March of Dimes, in which Pin Oak was challenged to raise $2,000 in just 2 minutes! Members then donated their time along with the money collected by walking in the March for Babies in Houston. What is NJHS? The National Junior Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding junior high school students. More than just an honor roll; NJHS serves to honor students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character, and Citizenship. To be academically eligible, candidates must be members of the 7th or 8th grade class. These candidates must have a minimum cumulative scholastic average of 87% in each of their core classes. Their eligibility for membership will then be evaluated according to their service, leadership, citizenship, and character.
