Resources for e-learning environments • National Electronic Library Interface Nelli using MetaLib-SFX system was lauched 15th Sept 2004 (the portal of Turku University Library)
Resources for e-learning environments • the Finnish Virtual University (FVU) has arranged national training programmes in the use of information technology in e-learning. • TieVie is a FVU training program for information and communication technologies (ICT). The training helps to apply ICT in teaching in a pedagogically sound manner. • Many librarians and information specialists have participated these FVU training programmes. Helena Tähtinen 2004

Resources for e-learning environments • University and polytechnical libraries have started national cooperative projects to share and coordinate e-learning environments in information literacy • Free e-learning environments are collected together and updated in a public website (30 polytechnical and 34 university courses): http://www.opiskelijakirjasto.lib.helsinki.fi/hankkeet/tiedonhallinta/index.htm (in Finnish) Helena Tähtinen 2004
Resources for e-learning environments • Finnish university libraries have also published in cooperation e-learning courses for information literacy education. TieDot Project is a FVU project, which has accomplished 15 different web-based coursesin information literacy education (http://www.uku.fi/kirjasto/TieDot/) • Future plans to form suitable information literacy education moduls and a database to be freely used in libraries

WorkMates of Turku University • WorkMates (Työporukka in Finnish) is a www-platform for collaborative e-learning. Users may produce their own material and documents and share them with other participants. The service is strongly linked with prominent network systems, from network video materials and Windows network drives to user authentication (http://wm.utu.fi) • The WorkMates program is developed by the Educational Technology Unit in the University of Turku (http://etu.utu.fi/en/index.html) Helena Tähtinen 2004
WorkMates of Turku University • WorkMatesis widelyin the University of Turku http://wm.utu.fiand as well outside the university for example in cooperative projects. • WorkMates can be accessed anywhere with Internet connection using the proper identification. • All faculties of Turku University have their own area in the WorkMates: the area called Medica for the needs of Medical Faculty was launched 2001. WorkMates of Turku University - Medica • Mecica in used trough the medical curriculum, as well in medical distance education and medical continuing education. • Information literacy education (ILE ) for first year medical student starts in the beginning of the curriculum using the WorkMates Medica. • ILE has been compulsory now for 15 years. • A simple e-learning package in two parts: national and international information resources (web-based for three years now). WorkMates of Turku University - Medica • Lectures on various databases and web-services, example searches, hints and links to possible guides and other free ILE sites and exercises to be accomplished alone or as a group. • An area for questions, feedback and conversation. Participation here is compulsory part of this education. • Topics of current medical substance teaching is included in questions, examples and exercises. Helena Tähtinen 2004
WorkMates of Turku University - Medica • The Professor for continuing education in medicine has planned some dilemmas to be solved by students using WorkMates in discussions and presentations. Internet is widely used at this point as the information resource. • Teachers in medicine have taken part in planning exercises as have done the library staff who also answer to the exercise emailings of the students. WorkMates of Turku University - Medica • Technical staff of Educational Technology Unit helps in technical problems, develops and maintains the platform. • the Medical Faculty has plans to combine a small units of ILE to every level of curriculum and use the WorkMates platform in cooperation with the medical library.
