CISCO PM CASE COMPETITION TEAM: OVERNIGHT SENSATIONS MIT Sloan school of management
Common Themes Across Stakeholders • Overall Need:An easier and reliable means of audio and video communication between Earth and colonies on Mars to facilitate timely exchange of information and transfer of data Communication Between Mars and Earth Communication within Mars Colony • “Is my daughter safe?” – Concerned Parent • “I am concerned that distance between sites will make it difficult to create a sense of community” – Mayor • “How can I get guidance from subject matter experts on Earth?” – Scientist • “Farming is a multi-person job. How will I be able to communicate with my partners while in the field?” – Farmer • “How can I constantly update the main site with my location and findings while I am exploring Mars?” – Explorer • “How can we offer rapid emergency support?” – NASA Eng. Must Haves: Reliable; Easy Must Haves: Rapid; Creating Community
Example Implementation of Cisco Technology: • Potential Benefits on Mars • Current Use Cases on Earth • Switch devices and locations seamlessly • Reliable, inexpensive intra-galactic communication • Secure direct and team messages, which can be read and responded to right away—or flagged for follow up later • Increase safety through better teamwork and agile conversation while adapting to new environment • Quick and simple file sharing in shared space or direct message • Colonists can work on cross-site projects in parallel • Ability to draw/write on handheld devices with instant data share - real-time iterations • Colonists can invite experts and external parties to meeting and conversation spaces • Better connectivity translates to higher quality of life and retention at the colony
Appendix 1: Assumptions • No one under the age of eighteen allowed on first trip to colony • No pets allowed on first trip to colony • Colony members have already been selected so stakeholders were predetermined • Existing space communication technologies will be used for indoor communication on Mars • All stakeholders and their associated quotes are fictional
Appendix 2: Additional Stakeholder Quotes • “Will I be safe living on another planet?” – Scientist • “How can I maintain a healthy diet in a stressed environment for growing food?” – Farmer • “How will I manage such a distance from my friends and family? Will they understand my very different lifestyle and the challenges that will come with that?” – Explorer • “How can I participate in learning the latest medical procedures and treatment methods?” – Doctor • "I'm worried that it will be cramped with us all living in one place“ – Mayor • "I can't believe I will be interacting with the same 1000 people for the foreseeable future“ – Farmer • "Resources will be scarce, what if there's a famine?“ – Family Member
Appendix 3: Feasibility Concerns • Real-time data transfer • Developmental progress of technology to effectively accomplish proposed solutions • Implementation and Design Cost • Establishing strong connectivity between Earth and Mars
