  1. Metal and heavy metal Mr. Cowan AMU4EI FHCI

  2. What is metal? • Developed in the late 1960’s and 1970’s • Originated in the United States and England • Roots were in Blues Rock and Psychedelic Music • Characterized by amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, and overall loudness

  3. First Bands in metal • The first heavy metal bands included: Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath

  4. Led Zeppelin • Considered one of the founders of metal music • English rock band formed in the 1960’s • Considered to be one of the most successful groups of all time • Hits include: Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta’ Love, Over the Hills and Far Away

  5. Controversy • Led Zeppelin are often accused of stealing a number of their most popular songs from other artists • Now THIS is a band that has pulled some seriously cold-hearted theft in their time. As with many early rock artists who founded their love of guitars tuning in to black blues artists on the radio, Jimmy Page became a master at "re-imagining" certain blues riffs as his own. • Only two tracks from Zeppelin's self-titled debut album were 100% original creations, as far as the world knows - that's the opening track "Good Times, Bad Times" and "Your Time Is Gonna Come". All the others are a mish-mash of older tracks written by musicians who were too poor to fight the might of Zeppelin's lawyers. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/entertainment/5_bands_who_stole_their_best_songs.html

  6. Controversy • Maybe the influence from other artists isn't so bad, but with Zeppelin, the worst thing about it was how the band's lawyers and label treated the artists who so clearly wrote the songs first. It was rare for them to fight back and win a credit, and even when they did, some really dirty tricks were played. • Notice the very first example, where Jimmy Page took all credit for "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You". Anne Brendon sued in the 1980s for stealing her song and lyrics for the Joan Baez song she wrote, and she eventually won, but the credit was split three ways between Page, Brendon and Zep singer Robert Plant. You can probably guess what that meant for the royalties. But hey, at least Zeppelin made the songs rock way harder and give them the best production ever. • What's the lesson in all of this? Don't be put off by finding influence in other songs - we all stand on the shoulders of giants - but make sure you credit anyone else who effectively contributes to your work. You can then put your version on sale, and as long as they're listed as a co-songwriter, your country's publishing collection society will send them their share of the royalties. http://www.cracked.com/article_19848_7-famous-musicians-who-stole-some-their-biggest-hits_p1.html
