When to Involve the Police • Respond effectively and recognise what dealing with from outset. • Abuse- Domestic Violence/psychological • Neglect / Poor practice Section 44 MCA • Grooming • Think Crime then safeguard
How to respond effectively • Delay – don’t wait too long and identify if needs to be dealt within safeguarding • Is there need for fast track actions to take place ..golden hour or critical incident • Good record keeping – notes kept and reasons for not recording • Consider wider implications
Response – continued • Evidence gathering – corroboration and information .Judgements as witness . Vulnerability – repeat calls • New definition regarding Serious Abuse/Serious Incidents • Takes place within an institutional care or NHS setting ; or Incidents involving multiple vulnerable victims and or suspects; or Historical institutional abuse;
Role of police • Fundamental role prevention, identification, investigation, risk management and detection of criminal offences • Support of witnesses- VSI • Lead investigation/ barriers to reporting • Patient , relatives, visitor, staff, member of public • Response to different needs
Information Sharing • MARAC – Eligibility, risk assessments and professional judgement, cohesiveness and interaction of process, signposting • SAPB – role in information sharing and joint working and improve partnership working • MCA and Consent around information sharing
Other considerations • Early engagement • Clear agreement on roles and responsibilities and actions • Agree how communication should take place during investigation. • ACPO protocol
