This article discusses the current status of the EMEP measurement network in Russia and its potential for development. It explores the use of EMEP data in addressing environmental acidification and eutrophication issues. The article also highlights the efforts to improve the operation and quality control of the Russian EMEP network and suggests potential locations for new EMEP stations.

Current status of EMEP measurement network in Russia • Information products used EMEP data and evaluations • Puzzle of regional atmospheric monitoring on European Russia and potential of network developments Outline of information
Measurement program in 2000s (basic items of level 1 site) • Inorganic compounds in precipitation (major ions, EC, pH) • Inorganic compounds in air (SO2, sulfate, nitrate, ammonium) • Meteorology (closed) • Gases (O3 and NO2) in air Main target problem of data use: - environmental acidification, and-eutrophication of surface water ecosystems. Janiskoski Pinega Central-Forest BR Danki Current operation of Rus EMEP
Quality control forRussian EMEP network operation • Improvement of operability with translated “EMEP manual for sampling and chemical analysis” (2006-2007)(to be helpful for other CIS countries) • Participation at all ILC project of EMEP А
Based on averages of wet and dry deposition calculations for 2000-2007 Calculations of CL (critical loads) based on measurements of EMEP stations (g/m2/yr) Sulphur Nitrogen
Using of information for governmental authorities & public Roshydromet publishes 2 special Reports on annual basis (RUS only): “Review of the state of background natural environment over the territory of CIS countries” “Review of environmental pollution in Russia” Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) prepared annually the general yearbook • “The Governmental Report. On the State and Protection of Environment in Russian Federation” Two version: - full book for Gov (limited numbers) and to put on WEB- executive summary (for Journals)
Using of information for governmental authorities & public Reporting style for Reports: • RusEMEP network and IGCE provided the fulfilling obligation of Russia within CLRTAP and EMEP (with the limited funding); • No evidence of CL exceeding by S and N deposition to be identified by measurement evaluations; • Not enough density of EMEP monitoring network • A harmonization with other national network be helpful to use data in cooperation Rare scientific articles: - Meteorology and Hydrology, 2010, No 6 (A.G. Ryaboshapko, et al.)
National precipitation chemistry network in Russia (from 1970s, up to 130 urban/rural/remote sites, 12 regional Labs)
Regional WMO GAW stations (precipitation chemistry) – 10 selected from more than 120 national PC measurement sites Regional analytical chem Labs
Regional WMO GAW stations (precipitation chemistry) – 10 selected from more than 120 national PC measurement sites+ 5 stations of Integrated Background Monitoring Network+ 4 EMEP stations Regional analytical chem Labs
Measurement program of national PC networks (basic for all site) • Inorganic compounds in precipitation (major ions, EC, pH) • Rain gage • Meteorology (for IBMoN site – as collaboration activity) • Measurement program of Rus national IBMoN(basic program) • Priority heavy metals, main pesticides and BP/BPL in precipitation (monthly or event sampling) • TSP, HM, pesticides and BP/BPL in air (daily sampling) • SO2 (daily sampling) • Meteorology Measurement programs on the atmospheric pollutants
Field comparison results between measurements by IBMoN and EMEP IBMoN (vertical axis) vs EMEP results on SO2 and sulfate at OKA-Terrase/DANKI for 2001-2004
National Precipitation Chemistry network could decrease the sparse density of EMEP wet deposition data on major ions (with harmonization on sampling and sample storage procedures) • IBMoN site may provide the infrastructure for air sampling of EMEP program • IBMoN data on priority pollutants (HM, some POPs), gases and TSP may be a contribution for EMEP Potential for cooperation between networks on European Russia
Main principles – to investigate and work on disclosed ecological problems of Europe and European part of Russia • Acidification of soils and surface water bodies (3); • Eutrophication of terrestrial aquatic ecosystems (Э); • High content (or growing) of photooxidants at regional level (Ф); • POPs accumulation in ecosystems and its components (O); • Heavy metal accumulation in natural environmental systems (M); • Effect of aerosols РМ-2,5 and РМ-10 (A). Prospective suggestions by IGCE for EMEP monitoring development (prepared for governmental program 2013-2015)
