Relations & changes in world region • Within the Indian subcontinent, most of the conflict with other regions has been with Pakistan… even after the Indo-Pakistani wars of the 1970s, not much has changed • 1984: The Siachen War began as military response to conflict over the Siachen Glacier territory in Kashmir; a cease-fire went into effect in 2003 • In the late 90s, nuclear testing began in both India and Pakistan, further souring relations between the 2 countries • In 1999, the Kashmir region yet again proves a point of conflict between India & Pakistan, setting off the Kargil War, within the district and along the Line of Control– a de facto border designated as the line between the 2 countries
